As COP15 delegations continue in Copenhagen, Danish architects MAPT have erected a striking pavilion composed of a set of old shipping containers stacked up like building blocks. The recycled pavilion will host an interactive exhibit focusing on urban sustainability, and the interior of the structure is constructed entirely of materials salvaged from the wood and wind turbine industries.

Jordan’s Aqaba Container Terminal on Monday unveiled plans for a $235 million terminal expansion project centered on the 1,509-foot extension of its berth, which will increase annual container throughout capacity to 2 million 20-foot equivalent units when fully completed and equipped. The port’s plan calls for capital expenditure during the 2009-2013 plan period that will bring the total investment since 2006 to $335 million.

In the framework of a general trend seeing big shipping lines more and more attentive to environmental issues in building new container and carrier vessels, French line CMA CGM are exploring a number of alternative means so as to improve the environmental image of sea freight. In addition to commissioning new, more efficient container ships, CMA CGM are looking at how manufacturing improvements in containers themselves can make carbon-savings by the use of new materials.
